Communication Corner – November 1 is Autistics Speaking Day
Strengthening the voices of autistic individuals
One of the most important ways that we all connect to the world is through communication. Autistics Speaking Day provides an opportunity for autistic individuals to communicate, by telling their stories, sharing their challenges and celebrations, and expressing their interests and ambitions. It’s a day for them to celebrate who they are!
They do this using whichever mode of communication works for them, sharing their stories through their artwork, poetry, videos, personal essays, memes, podcasts, blog posts, and through the use of many languages and social media platforms.
History
Autistic Speaking Day was founded in 2010 by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, who believed in the importance of centering autistic voices in discussions about autism. It has played a crucial role in shifting the narrative from “autism speaks” to “autistics speak”. It continues to be an open invitation to anyone with autism, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, as well as their friends and families. Recognize this day by listening, reading, learning, and celebrating the authentic voices of the autism community.
