Communication Corner – November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a complex disease that is challenging to manage on a daily basis. Did you know that persons with an intellectual or developmental disability are estimated to be 2-3 times more likely to develop diabetes compared to the general population?

Some tools for communicating about diabetes management may include:

  • “Easy read” information that explains tests being done and how those results will affect care. Examples of guides are at Diabetes UK or PreventingDiabetes.org.
  • Watch a video about taking care of your diabetes. Here is an example by ZeroGravity.
  • It is important that the outcomes of blood sugar tests are communicated to the person in a way they understand. This may be done through a number line visual with happy, sad faces like this:
A horizontal meter labeled "Blood sugar levels number line, specific to the individual" going from dark red to yellow to green and back with sad faces on the red areas, happy faces on the green areas and faces with incremental happiness and sadness in between.
