Alternative or Augmentative Communication (AAC) Survey

We are conducting a research study to learn more about ways that caregivers can support the use of Alternative or Augmentative Communication (AAC) in adults with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities. The study will examine the use of a mobile application, or “app”, on a phone or tablet. The app is designed to help parents, caregivers or direct support professionals use AAC to communicate with the person that they support.

To be a part of this study, individuals would be eligible for participation if they:

  1. Are adults aged 18 or over.
  2. Provide support or care for an adult (18 or over) who:
    • Has a diagnosis for ID/DD (includes ASD)
    • Has access to or currently uses a high-tech AAC device. For example, this typically refers to a mobile phone or tablet with an application downloaded on the device that can “talk” for the individual
    • Does not independently and reliably communicate their needs or engage in social conversation with others
  3. Provide support or care (to an adult identified above) for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
  4. Have access to a phone or mobile device on which an app can be downloaded and used weekly
  5. English in the primary language spoken by the participant and the individual that they support.

If you would like to learn more information about the study or know of anyone that may benefit from participating, please contact us and we can arrange for a time to talk in more detail.
