July is Disability Pride Month

July is Disability Pride Month! To commemorate the July 26, 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we recognize July as Disability Pride Month in Pennsylvania and beyond. The ADA heralded increased equity in the lives of Americans with disabilities by ensuring equal opportunity in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government and telecommunications. Throughout July, we encourage individuals with disabilities to share their unique perspectives and live proud everyday lives.

Disability Pride Pennsylvania (DPP) hosts a series of celebrations each year. Upcoming events include:

  • July 7 – Erie, Perry Square, 571 State Street
  • July 14 – Washington, Main Street Community Pavilion, 139 S Main Street
  • Sept. 26 – Pittsburgh, Schenley Plaza, 4100 Forbes Avenue

DPP also invites you to share your story during its “We Belong Here” challenge. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to share stories that foster acceptance and belonging by completing the sentence, “Disability Pride means…”.
