Communication Corner – January 10 is National Vision Board Day

Communicating goals in a tangible way

National Vision Board Day is celebrated annually on the second Saturday of January and inspires individuals to live the life they’ve always dreamed of with the aid of a vision board. A vision board is a pictural representation of goals and dreams through the use of objects, favorite quotes, memories, cards, pictures, or anything that motivates you.

Vision boards can also be a powerful tool helping the individual express needs, make choices, set goals, and connect with others. Below are some design tips to consider when helping the individual create their board.

  • Adapt the board to the individual’s vocabulary, literacy level, and visual preferences.
  • Include familiar pictures, symbols, and activities that matter most to the individual.
  • Ensure that the board is accessible and easy to use (consider symbol choices, color scheme, and layout).
  • Use tactile materials or real objects to represent goals.
  • Implement braille labels or large print text.
  • Involve the individual in the planning and design of the board.
  • Use sounds, scents, or movement-related objects.
  • Use assistive technology devices to create the board.
  • Use your LifeCourse Trajectory

“Vision is not about what you see – it’s about what you imagine, plan, and believe is possible.”
