Communication Corner – December 11 is National App Day

Appreciating and exploring technology that empowers

National App Day was established in 2017 and celebrates the life-changing impact that apps have had on our daily lives. Apps have transformed how we communicate, work, entertain, and complete daily tasks. This day recognizes the creativity, dedication, and hard work of app developers and the opportunities and experiences they have provided.

Apps are also empowering for individuals who do not rely on speech to communicate by giving them a voice and helping to support independence and inclusion. They assist with:

  • Expressing wants and needs
  • Building new friendships and relationships
  • Asking questions and making choices
  • Navigating daily activities such as ordering food or shopping
  • Managing finances
  • Health monitoring

How to Celebrate!

  • Explore new apps
  • Leave reviews and ratings
  • Share your favorites
  • Assist those who are learning how to navigate new apps

Stories from App Users

“When I was 14, my words lived in my head but rarely made it out. Cerebral palsy made speaking difficult, and most people assumed I was quiet because I had nothing to say. The truth was, I had too much to say — I just didn’t have the bridge to get it across.” -Anonymous

“The app didn’t just help me communicate — it gave me a way to connect. And in those connections, I found confidence I didn’t know I had.” -Anonymous

“Over time, I customized the app with my favorite phrases, inside jokes, and even a sarcastic “Really?” button. I could join debates, comfort friends, and tell my mom I loved her without her having to guess from my eyes.” -Anonymous
