Communication Corner – June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

Did you know that two-thirds of Americans have at least one major potential risk factor for dementia?

There are 10 warning signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. One of the signs is:

  1. New problems with words in speaking or writing

This may include challenges with following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and not know how to continue. They may repeat themselves. Or they may have difficulty finding the right vocabulary to use, such as naming a familiar object.

Other warning signs and symptoms include:

  • Changes in mood and personality  
  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  • Challenges in planning or solving problems
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks
  • Confusion with time or place
  • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
  • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
  • Decreased or poor judgment
  • Withdrawal from work or social activities
